1. Create a Block Schedule
It’s so easy to find yourself wavering from tasks, or spending too much time on one specific task if you don’t set a schedule to go by. Block off time in the mornings to check emails, and again in the afternoon. Use midday for project planning, and content creation, and schedule out lunch and small breaks in between! You’ll find that breaking up your time throughout the day will help boost productivity in a great way.
2. Take Mental Breaks
Take mini-breaks throughout the day to refresh and recharge your mind. Go on a walk, visit your favorite flower shop, call a friend, or pick up a good read… it’s important to take small breaks so as to not burn yourself out.
3. Quit Multi-Tasking
I. Am. The. WORST. At. This… I’m ALWAYS trying to do a million things at once, and as great as it is to be able to multi-task, it’s also not the best idea when you’re a creative working from home. Multi-tasking means you aren’t giving your full attention to one project in particular, and it can lead to having most tasks only half done, or simply not finished the way you would like. I try to always devote time to finishing one task completely before jumping into another.
4. Change Your Scenery
I’ve found that my creative juices flow best, whenever I change up the environment that I’m working from. I usually work from the same spot in my apartment, but I love to mix it up by hopping over to a favorite local coffee shop or quaint bookstore. (Plus, it’s always good to get out for a little bit!)
5. Say No to Plans or Events That Interfere with Your Deadlines
Working from home means, you are your own boss. And as wonderful and amazing as that can be, it can also lead to not managing time wisely. There have been times where as much as I would love to meet a friend for coffee or lunch, stop and break to watch a new show on Netflix, or attend a fun event… I’ve had to decline or politely say no due to a deadline. If I don’t work or finish a project, I won’t get paid and I’m not spending my time as a freelancer wisely. So, saying no isn’t always a bad thing. It’s all about balance and planning out your time in the best way. Plus, I always enjoy my free time with friends so much more when I know I have my work for the day finished.
