Laughter adds years to your life
“I believe my longevity has depended a great deal on the amount of laughter I’ve had in my life.” – Norman Lear, 98 years young
While watching the Golden Globes last night with Nathan, I overheard those words by Norman Lear. He was giving a speech after just receiving the Carol Burnett Award for his immense contributions to the world of television. Upon hearing these words, I looked over at Nate and simply said, wow how true that sentiment is. When I think of people I know who have lived or are still living a long, happy, and fulfilled life, I think of my grandfather and my grandmother, my mother’s parents. I think about their profound love of laughter and making those around them feel so much joy. I think about people like my Uncle Bob, his father, Nathan’s grandfather…all men that never took life too seriously, and always found ways to put a smile on the faces of others. Both family and strangers.
That being said, as we enter into a new month I really want to shift my focus. And emphasize seeking joy and laughter always. If there’s one thing that Nathan and I never seem to run low on, it’s laughter. We’re constantly making each other laugh and finding ways to keep life fun and exciting. There’s always a reason to celebrate at the Sutlief house. I want to continue to carry this mentality and sentiment throughout March, but also the rest of the year. The rest of our lives. As I lean into a season of rest, I also want to lean into a season of joy, laughter, and the excitement and newness that comes with spring.
I woke up today so excited for a brand new month, and am so looking forward to a fresh new start. There’s just something about a new month that brings renewed energy and excitement for what’s ahead. I’m not sure about you, but I have an extra pep in my step today as I think about spring’s upcoming arrival and daylight savings! I’m so ready for a little extra warmth on my skin and more afternoons spent outside as I slowly step out of hibernation mode. The past few months in Colorado have been cold, and I can’t wait for a seasonal shift. Bring on the sunshine and warm weather!

Reading: I finally finished Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert last month, and absolutely loved it. It provides such a fresh and unique perspective on the creative process. (If you haven’t read it before, I highly recommend it. It filled me with so much inspiration and a new zest for life as a creative.)
I’m currently reading The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein and really enjoying it so far. I’ve heard so many wonderful things. (a little late jumping on this one!)
And also re-reading The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. This book is absolutely beautiful and life-changing. Joan Didion has such an incredible way with words and storytelling. If you haven’t watched her documentary on Netflix yet (The Center Will Not Hold), you must add it to your list!
Listening To: I always have so many different Spotify playlists going and tend to rotate between, jazz, indie, and our wedding playlists. I’ve had Brittany Howard on repeat recently and feel as though her song Stay High is this month’s anthem. Spring playlist coming soon!
Cooking: I recently ordered A Kitchen in France and A Table for Friends… both filled with mouth-watering dishes that I can not wait to make at home.
Watching: Everything. (haha) Mostly documentaries: Being Serena, Tiger, Allen v. Farrow, The Night Stalker (side note – my parents lived through this in LA! It happened a few years before I was born.) I’m adding Charles & Diana: 1983 to the list this week! Nathan and I are also currently obsessed with M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant on Apple TV… The story has a great hook, and we’re also in it for the amazing food & wine shots. Not to mention the couple’s gorgeous Philadelphia home.
